The male student was angered by the temporary closure of the varsity thanks to a confirmed COVID-19 infection among the teaching staff. Students taunted and pushed educators as they walked off school premises, but one student seen head-butting an educator within the video.
The incident happened on Thursday 16 July 2020 within the varsity premises
North West education MEC Mmaphefo Matsemela said she was disappointed by the incident.
“This behaviour of assaulting teachers in our schools by learners is completely unacceptable. In 2018 a teacher was stabbed to death by a learner within the same sub-district and that we cannot allow such a deplorable behaviour to resurface in our schools. As a department we view this as a really serious offence to be committed by learners.”
“Teachers are parents to learners while they're in class and no child are going to be allowed to boost a hand towards them. I even have instructed the officials of the department to make sure that a disciplinary hearing takes place as soon as possible against all learners involved within the incident.”
The student that assaulted an educator has been suspended immediately after the incident. The disciplinary hearing is predicted to require place in the week after the varsity has been decontaminated and disinfected.
