Alexandra’s COSAS leader, Mpumelelo Maringa said this decision was as a results of the increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases within the area.
“There are several schools that have confirmed cases. We can’t risk learners’ lives by sending them to high school . As COSAS we are declaring a complete shutdown of all schools including primary schools.”
“We advise all learners to remain faraway from schools and fogeys to not send their children to colleges ranging from Monday until further notice,” said Maringa.
COSAS claimed its actions were endorsed by all parents, teachers’ unions and therefore the Gauteng Department of Education . But Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona denied this, labelling the action as “pure criminality that ought to be discouraged”.
Currently, most faculties in Alexandra are closed and most parents are in support of COSAS’s decision.
